Artificial Insemination

Upon arrival at South West Equine Centre mares will be given a thorough reproductive examination. If history or ultrasound indicates, an endometrial swab and/or biopsy may be taken. Mares will be teased and scanned as necessary to follow progress through their oestrus cycle. Chorulon or Ovuplant are used to control the time of ovulation thereby reducing the number of inseminations required per cycle.
Semen used can be fresh, chilled or frozen. Fresh semen can be collected and used on site, chilled semen can be couriered to the centre for insemination upon arrival, while frozen semen can be stored at T.L.G. and thawed and inseminated when required.
Mares will be scanned 12-24 hours following insemination to ensure that ovulation has occurred, then must be scanned for pregnancy 14-16 days after ovulation. This is the optimum time to deal with twins, and will also give the maximum chance to catch the mare on the next cycle if she is not pregnant. She will be scanned again at 28-30 days to ensure that the pregnancy is viable, and her final scan is at 42 days when she is confirmed pregnant.
