Frozen Semen
Successful use of frozen semen requires more intensive mare management than fresh or chilled semen inseminations due to reduced longevity of the semen in the mares reproductive tract. Traditionally, conception rates using frozen semen were lower than for natural service or chilled semen often quoted at around 30%. With better handling and the production of superior product occurring the potential is there for conception rates to rival those of natural or chilled service.
To maximise your chances of frozen semen success, select a proven frozen semen stallion and/or semen frozen by a quality organization that distributes a semen analysis with the product. Use a young healthy mare ideally with a history of good fertility to frozen semen. Otherwise, choosing proven breeders to natural service or chilled semen is the next best option.
